SPRINGFIELD, Ill.  – If you’re a survivor of the Nov. 17 Illinois tornadoes, FEMA says you deserve every eligible penny in federal disaster assistance. 

Don’t leave possible FEMA grants and SBA disaster loans on the table. Take the necessary steps to help FEMA help you.

Register with FEMA—deadline close:  Disaster assistance may be available to tornado survivors who register with FEMA before the Jan. 27 deadline. The sooner you register the sooner you may qualify for FEMA assistance. Register at DisasterAssistance.gov or call 800-621-FEMA (3362). Help FEMA help you.

Only one registration per household:  FEMA assists eligible survivors by household. The assistance process stops if multiple applications are received from the same address. Applying multiple times doesn’t increase your chances of receiving federal disaster aid. It stops your chances. Help FEMA help you. Register only once.  

FEMA grants versus insurance benefits:  After registering with FEMA for assistance, some applicants may receive a letter indicating FEMA can’t help. Read any FEMA letter closely. FEMA may need insurance settlement documents to assure FEMA grants won’t duplicate insurance payments.  Help FEMA help you. Failure to submit needed documents could stop any additional assistance. 

Fast track the SBA Loan Application:  FEMA refers some applicants to the Small Business Administration to complete and submit an SBA loan application. You may not want a loan, but failure to submit the application may stop any further FEMA grants coming your way.  Help FEMA help you. The quickest way to apply is to complete an SBA disaster loan application online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure website at DisasterLoan.SBA.gov/ela.

Get Your FEMA/SBA questions answered: Call the FEMA help line, 800-621-FEMA (3362) or for face-to-face help, visit a FEMA/State Disaster Recovery Center – 2200 East Washington, East Peoria or the Brookport Library, 7415 S. U.S. Highway 45, Brookport.

FEMA Announces Opening of Application Period for Assistance to Firefighters Grants

DENTON, Texas — Beginning Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, the application period for Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) for Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 will be open, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced. These types of grants can cover the costs of crucial items for firefighters and paramedics such as firefighting equipment, rescue equipment and communications equipment.

“The AFG grants are critical to the efforts to protect life and property in communities,” said FEMA Region 6 Administrator Tony Robinson. “They allow firefighters and paramedics to properly do their jobs.”

The AFG application period begins on Monday at 7 a.m. and closes on Dec. 6, 2013, at 4 p.m. The following resources are available to help guide you through the process:

Federal Aid Programs for Santa Clara Pueblo

PURVIS, Miss. – Survivors of last month’s tornadoes, storms and flooding should know U.S. Small Business Administration disaster loan applications are not just for businesses; they are also for renters and homeowners. Most disaster loans go to individuals and families and represent a major source of federal funding for disaster home repair and reconstruction.

By submitting an SBA loan application, survivors may have access to the full range of disaster assistance. Interest rates may be as low as 1.688 percent with terms up to 30 years. If SBA does not approve someone – or approves a small loan that doesn’t cover all of recovery needs – a survivor may be referred to other grant programs to replace essential household items, replace, repair or store vehicles, or pay for other serious disaster-related needs.

SBA loans can be of vital assistance to renters; many of whom may not carry insurance. The SBA can help renters replace their essential items. Renters, as well as homeowners, may borrow up to $40,000 to repair or replace clothing, furniture, cars or appliances damaged or destroyed in the disaster.

The SBA can approve a loan for the repair or replacement of a home up to $200,000. Survivors may apply insurance settlements to their disaster loan. The opportunity an SBA disaster loan provides may be lost if disaster survivors wait past the application deadline.

A disaster loan also can help when a renter’s or homeowner’s insurance settlement falls short of covering assessed damages. An SBA low-interest loan can cover most uninsured costs. Survivors do not need to settle with their insurance company before applying for the SBA loan. By submitting the loan application, loan money may be available to renters and homeowners when it is needed most.

Of the more than 1,310 low-interest SBA disaster loan applications sent to Mississippi storm survivors, fewer than 130 have been completed and returned. FEMA registrants are urged to complete and return their applications as soon as possible.

The deadline for Mississippi storm survivors to apply for both FEMA assistance and an SBA loan is April 15, 2013. Loans do not have to be accepted but the applications may open doors to additional assistance.

It takes less than 30 minutes to fill out an application. A simple, fast, and very available way to complete the application is online, using the SBA’s electronic loan application. Go to https://DisasterLoan.SBA.gov/ELA. SBA specialists are also available to assist with applications at Disaster Recovery Centers. However, applicants who receive SBA loan applications must submit them to SBA loan officers to be eligible for assistance that covers personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.

SBA loan application is important part of the process

NEW YORK – In about half an hour, New York survivors of Hurricane Sandy can make a big difference in their recovery by applying for a low-interest disaster loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The process isn’t hard at all. By returning the SBA loan application, homeowners may be eligible for up to $200,000 to repair or replace their storm-damaged home. Homeowners and renters may be eligible for up to $40,000 for replacement of personal property.

The form asks for the survivor’s name, contact information, Social Security number, mailing address, address of damaged property, income and assets, monthly housing cost, insurance information, debts and credit references. The language is clear and the application is not long.

  • SBA customer service representatives are available to issue or accept low-interest disaster loan applications and answer questions at all New York State/FEMA Disaster Recovery centers and SBA Business Recovery Centers.
    • To find the nearest Disaster Recovery Center, go online to www.FEMA.gov/disaster-recovery-centers or, with a tablet or smartphone, go to m.fema.gov. Survivors may also text “DRC” and their Zip code to 43362 (4FEMA).

Federal Aid Programs for the State of Alabama Disaster Recovery

Dublin, OH – Providing assistance to individuals and businesses is not the only concern of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Ohio Emergency Management Agency (OEMA). Public Assistance (PA) grants will soon help Ohio communities recoup emergency response and debris removal costs from storms in late June.

Thirty seven counties were declared eligible on August 20 for disaster assistance as a result of the June 29-July 2 storms and straight line winds. Under the PA Grant Program, FEMA awards grants to assist state and local governments, tribal nations and certain private nonprofit organizations with their response to and recovery from disasters.

“The declaration opens the door to FEMA grants that help public entities with reconstruction of their infrastructure,” said Mike Moore, federal coordinating officer for the disaster. “The PA program strengthens communities which do not have all the means or resources to bounce back from a disaster, helping to ensure a community’s important public needs are met.”

Public assistance is based on a partnership between FEMA, state and local officials. Local governments identify their needs and costs and submit applications. The state ensures compliance and helps prioritize projects. FEMA is responsible for managing the program, approving grants and providing technical assistance on projects to the state and its applicants.

“This program is important to Ohio taxpayers,” said Nancy Dragani, state coordinating officer for Ohio EMA. “The program will provide federal and state funding to assist with debris removal, emergency protective measures and for some work performed by rural electric cooperatives.”

FEMA’s Public Assistance program pays 75 percent of eligible costs.  The state of Ohio is contributing 12.5 percent of the 25% percent non-federal share to eligible political subdivisions and the applicant is responsible for the remaining 12.5 percent balance.    

Application procedures for local governments were explained at a series of state applicant briefings held in August and September. FEMA PA specialists provided guidance to state and local officials throughout the application process. Approved projects are paid through the state from funding provided by FEMA. The deadline for applying for assistance is September 19th.

Federal, state and local teams have already started to inspect disaster-related damage, examine expenses identified by the state or local representatives and prepare reports that outline the scope of repair work needed and the estimated restoration cost.

Non-profit organizations may qualify for assistance to restore certain types of facilities that include educational, utility, emergency, medical, custodial care and other facilities that provide essential government types of services.
