Brookshire (Waller County) Disaster Recovery Center to Operate as Disaster Loan Outreach Center

AUSTIN, Texas – After FEMA’s Waller County disaster recovery center in Brookshire closes on June 4, it will begin operating as a U.S. Small Business Administration disaster loan outreach center on Monday, June 6.

Closed Saturdays and Sundays

The Brookshire disaster loan outreach center will operate from June 6-17.

SBA customer service representatives will be available to meet with business owners and residents to answer questions, explain SBA’s disaster loan program and close their approved disaster loans. Business owners and residents can meet with SBA representatives on the days and times indicated. No appointment is necessary.

Applicants for disaster loans may apply online using the electronic loan application via SBA’s secure website at disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.

Disaster loan information and application forms are also available from SBA’s Customer Service Center by calling 800-659-2955 or emailing disastercustomerservice@sba.gov. BATON ROUGE, La. – The Disaster Recovery Center in Monroe (Ouachita Parish), which is closing today, Friday, June 3, will reopen on Monday, June 6 at 12 noon and close at 6 p.m. It will be open Tuesday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.  On Friday, June 10 it will open at 8 a.m. and close permanently at 2 p.m.

BATON ROUGE, La. – The disaster recovery center in Shreveport will close on Friday, June 3, at 6 p.m., and transition to a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Loan Outreach Center (DLOC) beginning Monday, June 6, at 9 a.m.

The new DLOC will be located on the Ground Floor of Independence Stadium, at 3301 Pershing Blvd., Shreveport, La. Its hours of operation will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Representatives from the SBA will be available at the DLOC to meet individually with Louisiana residents and business owners who sustained damage as a result of the severe storms and flooding from March 8 to April 8. Representatives will answer questions, explain SBA’s disaster loan program, help complete loan applications and close approved disaster loans.

On June 6 at 12 p.m. PT, a one-hour Q&A TweetChat will take place about a possible 9.0 magnitude Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. The theme is “We’re preparing, and so can you.” ShakeOut will host the chat, which will be supported by scientists and preparedness subject matter experts.

Natchitoches Parish Disaster Survivors Can Get Rebuilding Tips at a Local Home Improvement Center

Baton Rouge, La. –Disaster survivors from Natchitoches Parish who are rebuilding after the severe storms and floods that occurred March 8 through April 8 can receive free consultations with hazard mitigation advisors from FEMA. The mitigation representatives are available at Lowe’s in Natchitoches Monday, June 6 through Saturday, June 11.

The mitigation advisors will answer questions about protecting homes from future disaster-related damage, as well as offer tips and techniques to build hazard resistant homes. Most of the information and the free publications provided are geared for do-it-yourself work and general contractors.

Recovery topics to be covered include flood insurance, elevating utilities and rebuilding flooded homes.

This Hurricane Season, Flood Insurance is a Wise Investment

AUSTIN, Texas – Flooding is a familiar and frequent natural disaster in Texas. Heavy rains are a consistent threat across the state, while hurricanes have caused hundreds of millions of dollars in flood damage to Texas homes and businesses in just the past few years.

A flood insurance policy through the National Flood Insurance Program offers Texas residents their best protection against loss. It takes 30 days for a new NFIP policy to go into effect. 

Hurricane season runs June 1 through Nov. 30. Will you have flood insurance in time?

“During hurricane season, Texas residents and businesses are at risk,” said Federal Coordinating Officer William J. Doran III, who is in charge of FEMA’s operations in Texas. “A policy with the NFIP is one of the best ways to supplement federal assistance and protect your home and livelihood.”

Flood damage is not covered under homeowner insurance policies and there is no guarantee that federal disaster assistance will be available when a flood occurs.

Flood insurance is available to homeowners, business owners and renters.  Policies offer up to $250,000 coverage for homeowners, up to $100,000 for personal property and up to $500,000 each for business contents and buildings.

Property owners who already have flood insurance policies are encouraged to check their policy each year, update as necessary and make sure premiums remain paid in full.

Disaster recovery centers are operated jointly by FEMA and the state. Visiting a disaster recovery center is not required to register for FEMA assistance.

After the center closes, Texans whose homes or businesses were affected by the April 17-24 storms and flooding can still register for assistance, get updates about applications, learn about the appeals process or check the status of their claim the following ways:

Monroe Civic Center, 401 Lea Joyner Expressway, will close on Thursday, June 2 at 6 p.m. The
center will reopen at a new location. Officials will announce the new location once that
information is available.

Residents can still register for disaster assistance or ask questions by calling the FEMA helpline
at 800-621-3362 or (TTY) 800-462-7585. Those who use 711/VRS can call 800-621-3362.
Lines are open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week until further notice. They can also register
online at DisasterAssistance.gov or fema.gov/disaster/4263. Registration ends on

Call the helpline to:

  •  Ask questions about FEMA determination letters.
  •      Learn how to appeal FEMA’s determination. All applicants have the right to appeal.
  •  Inquire about the status of a registration.
  •  Provide change of address, telephone and bank account numbers and insurance information to avoid disaster assistance processing delays.
  •  Receive information about FEMA home inspections.
  •  Get other questions answered about federal disaster assistance.

FEMA advises applicants to have their nine-digit FEMA registration number on hand when they
call. They also will be asked to verify their identity if they want access to their information.

We urge everyone to continue to use caution in areas where floodwaters remain. Monitor DOTD’s
511la.org website for updated road closure information. Look for advisories from your local
authorities and emergency managers. You can find the latest information on the state’s response at
emergency.la.gov. GOHSEP also provides information at gohsep.la.gov, Facebook and
Twitter. You can receive emergency alerts on most smartphones and tablets by downloading the new
Alert FM App. It is free for basic service. You can also download the Louisiana Emergency
