HARTFORD, Conn. – Teams of federal disaster recovery professionals are reaching out to Connecticut residents along the disaster-stricken coast to make sure survivors know what help is available and how to get it.

FEMA’s Community Relations teams advise homeowners, renters, business owners, eligible nonprofit agencies and faith-based organizations how to register for disaster assistance and can provide registration access when there is no other source available. They also help identify people with disabilities, those with access and functional needs, seniors and people with limited English proficiency.

Registering with FEMA is the most important step to securing assistance.

“We want people to know that they can register online, by smartphone or a toll-free phone call, and the sooner they register, the sooner we might be able to help,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Albert Lewis.

Easily identified by FEMA photo ID badges, Community Relations representatives seek out any location where people affected by the disaster might be found. They provide information about access to recovery resources, as well as the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), which offers low-interest disaster loans for homeowners, renters and businesses of all sizes.

Disaster Recovery Centers in designated counties offer one-on-one assistance, information on recovery resources, SBA low-interest loans, flood insurance and mitigation.

HARTFORD, Conn. – Free assistance with legal issues resulting from Hurricane Sandy is available for Connecticut disaster survivors in the counties designated for FEMA assistance.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, through an agreement with the Young Lawyers Division of the American Bar Association and in partnership with the Connecticut Bar Association, provides free legal help for survivors in these counties.

Disaster-related legal questions typically involve such matters as lost wills, landlord-tenant relations, property ownership, home repair contracts, and government benefit programs.

Survivors who qualify for assistance will be matched with Connecticut lawyers who have volunteered to provide free legal help.

Call volume to the toll-free registration line for Hurricane Sandy survivors across the Northeast is high, but registering online can bypass any potential wait. Survivors who are unable to access a computer at home or who do not have smart devices can visit a Disaster Recovery Center or a public library.

Survivors can get answers to their questions, information about state and federal programs and help with paperwork. Specialists can direct survivors to volunteer agencies that may be able to meet specific needs.

Federal assistance can include grants for rental assistance and essential home repairs. Disaster Recovery Centers Offer Resources to Hurricane Survivors

NEW ORLEANS – The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the city of New Orleans recently announced more than $3.5 million in additional recovery aid to restore the city’s Municipal Auditorium, which was damaged during Hurricane Katrina. 

As a component of the New Orleans Cultural Center, located alongside the Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts in Louis Armstrong Park, the Morris F.X. Jeff Sr. Municipal Auditorium, as it’s formally called, served pre-Katrina as a public facility with a 6,000-seat capacity to host civic events.

“The Municipal Auditorium has been an important New Orleans landmark with a rich cultural history for decades,” New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said. “These federal recovery dollars are an encouraging step forward and will supplement the money FEMA has already allocated. We are making progress every day and will continue to work with FEMA to identify new eligible funding for this storm-damaged building so that we can one day get it back into commerce. FEMA continues to be an important partner in our recovery from Hurricane Katrina.”

In recovery partnership with the city of New Orleans, FEMA Public Assistance staffers recently re-evaluated the eligible damages at the Municipal Auditorium and determined the additional funding was necessary to support disaster-related roof damages not previously taken into account. Likewise, the current funding also covers determined architectural finishes that will require asbestos abatement and remediation of disaster-impacted lead-based paint.

“Regarding roof damages, FEMA’s earlier site visits were limited to visual observations of damages, but more recent investigations with the city included roof sampling and the use of technology-based moisture surveys to best identify Katrina’s overall impact,” said FEMA’s Louisiana Recovery Office Acting Executive Director

Andre Cadogan. “As a result, the total area of damaged roofing was increased to approximately 110,000 square feet, which FEMA’s most recent funding encompasses.”   

FEMA’s previous funding addressed architectural damages in the Municipal Auditorium’s basement through fifth floors, excluding damages attributed to mold, asbestos and lead paint.

“In order for the city to move forward safely with these repairs, recent site investigations also focused on identifying architectural areas where damage to lead-based paint and asbestos materials had occurred. These findings are now represented in our recent grant and will enable the city to move this recovery project along as needed,” added Cadogan.

To date, FEMA has obligated approximately $6.4 billion in public assistance funding for Katrina and Rita related recovery work throughout the city of New Orleans.

When FEMA approves projects through its supplemental Public Assistance grant, the funds are made available to the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness, who disburses them to the applicant for eligible work completed.

NEW YORK – Today, FEMA announced an amendment to the major disaster declaration for the State of New York to include the Individual Assistance program for four additional counties.

Federal funding is available to affected individuals in Orange, Putnam, Sullivan and Ulster counties. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, and uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and households recover from the effects of the disaster.

Individuals and households who sustained losses in the designated counties can begin applying for assistance by registering online at www.disasterassistance.gov, by smartphone at m.fema.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired.  The toll-free telephone numbers will operate 24 hours, seven days a week until further notice.

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. — Since Hurricane Sandy struck New York, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved more than $338 million to help individuals and families recover from the disaster.

FEMA provides the following snapshot of the disaster recovery effort as of Nov. 12:

  • More than 176,000 New Yorkers have contacted FEMA for information or registered for assistance with FEMA and more than $338 million has been approved.  More than 91,000 have applied through the online application site at www.disasterassistance.gov.
     
  • 30 Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) are open in the nine declared counties.  These include mobile sites as well as fixed sites, and to date more than 12,000 survivors have been assisted at DRCs in New York.
     
  • More than 1,100 Community Relations (CR) specialists are strategically positioned throughout affected communities, going door to door explaining the types of disaster assistance available and how to register. More teams continue to arrive daily.
     
  • 1,126 inspectors in the field have completed more than 44,000 home inspections.
     
  • 70 Points of Distribution (PODs) are open and providing supplies to the affected residents.
     
  • 11 Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (DMATs) and 1 (Rapid Deployment Force) RDF team from the Department of Health and Human Services are deployed in New York.
     
  • New York’s major disaster declaration was amended so that the thirteen declared counties are now approved for all categories of Public Assistance, which includes reimbursement for eligible costs of emergency response services, debris removal and repairs to public infrastructure. 
     
  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, acting on a mission assignment from FEMA, has removed more than 270 million gallons of saltwater from tunnels, underpasses and other areas throughout New York City – enough to fill all of Central Park two feet deep.
     
  • The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) continues to operate five Business Disaster Recovery Centers in New York. As of November 12, the SBA has issued more than 100,000 home disaster loan applications, and more than 26,000 business disaster loan applications in New York.

Register Online with FEMA for Assistance after Hurricane Sandy

American Sign Language Interpreters Are Available in Disaster Recovery Centers

More than 1,000 FEMA community relations personnel are blanketing damaged neighborhoods, going door-to-door delivering information vital to recovery and encouraging residents with damaged property to register for assistance. FEMA inspectors will contact survivors directly after they have registered.
