CHICAGO – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released $746,077 in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funds to the Village of Ottawa, Oh., for the acquisition and demolition of nine residential structures and the acquisition of one adjacent vacant parcel located in the Blanchard River floodplain.

 

“The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program enables communities to implement critical mitigation measures to reduce the risk of losing lives and property,” said FEMA Region V Administrator Andrew Velasquez III. “The acquisition of these homes permanently removes the structures from the floodplain and greatly reduces the financial impact on individuals and the community when future flooding occurs in this area.”

 

“Federal funding for the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program allows Ohio to continue with important mitigation projects such as this, which aids in the reduction of property damage caused by repetitive flooding,” said Nancy Dragani, executive director of the Ohio Emergency Management Agency.

 

HMGP provides grants to state and local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures. Through HMGP, FEMA will pay 75 percent of the $994,769 eligible project cost. The remaining 25 percent of the funds, $248,692, will be provided by the State of Ohio and the Village of Ottawa.

FEMA Extends Disaster Assistance Deadline for Illinois Tornado Survivors: FEMA says let us know you need help

DENVER — FEMA announced today that federal disaster aid totaling $3,965,356.40 has been made available to Mor-Gran-Sou Electric Cooperative and $1,240,902.86 has been made available to Slope Electric Cooperative.  The funds are being made available as part of the federal disaster declaration made by President Obama to assist North Dakota in dealing with the early October blizzard.

The funds are being provided for repairs Mor-Gran-Sou took to restore power lines damaged by the storm.  The storm impacted more than 50 miles of line in Grant County and four miles in Sioux County.  In addition hundreds of poles needed to be replaced.  Similar damage occurred in Adams and Hettinger counties with Slope Electric needing to replace hundreds of poles and miles of line. The repairs were needed to restore power to customers in the Mor-Gran-Sou and Slope Electric service areas.

Additional funding has been provided to jurisdictions in Grant, Adams and Morton counties.  This aid was provided to communities to pay for debris removal, road repairs and restoration of public facilities like schools.  The total federal share provided to all applicants statewide for the October storm is $6.2 million.  A total of 33 projects were funded under the disaster declaration.

FEMA’s Public Assistance Program provides funding to local government jurisdictions and eligible private non-profits for the repair, replacement, or restoration of disaster-damaged infrastructure as well as costs incurred for disaster cleanup or emergency actions taken to protect lives or property. The federal share of recovery costs is 75 percent. The remaining share is the responsibility of the state and local government or non-profit organization.

FEMA Provides $5 Million to North Dakota RECs for October Storm Repairs

AUSTIN, Texas – A Jan. 17, 2014 amendment to a federal disaster declaration for Texas following the severe storms and flooding that impacted central portions of the state on Oct. 30-31, 2013 now includes Freestone County.

Eligible state and local governments and certain private nonprofit applicants in Freestone are eligible for Public Assistance funding reimbursements for both emergency and permanent work categories after damage assessments were concluded by officials from the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Emergency work may include debris removal and emergency protective measures, while permanent work may include repairs to road systems bridges, water control facilities and public buildings, contents and utilities, and repairs to parks and recreational facilities.

On Dec. 20, 2013, Caldwell, Hays and Travis counties were designated for Public Assistance under a presidential disaster declaration.

Freestone County, Texas Added to Federal Declaration for Halloween Floods

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – While Massac and Tazewell county residents are working to recover following the Nov. 17 tornadoes, many of them also need to recover emotionally.

Free help is available for tornado survivors who feel mentally overwhelmed, exhausted or unable to cope.

The Illinois Strong Crisis Counselor Program is a FEMA funded initiative that provides emotional support, recovery education, recovery resource information and coping tips for Massac and Tazewell county survivors.

Services provided in this partnership include a toll-free hotline telephone number during these critical times.

Survivors in Massac and Tazewell counties who are emotionally affected shouldn’t hesitate to call crisis counseling representatives at 800-985-5990 or TTY 800-846-8517 for help. The number operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until further notice.

Nov. 17 tornado survivors may overlook the signs of emotional stress while they work to rebuild their lives. While individuals respond to stress in different ways, emotional distress following disasters can make the recovery process more difficult.

Crisis Counseling Available to Massac, Tazewell County Tornado Survivors

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Nov. 17 tornado survivors have less than a week to register for federal disaster assistance.

Survivors must register by Monday, Jan. 27, to be considered for FEMA grants and SBA low-interest disaster loans to help cover eligible disaster-related expenses, including:

  • Temporary housing for homeowners and renters;
  • Home repairs and rebuilding;
  • Repair or replacement of lost personal property, including vehicles; and
  • Other serious disaster-related expenses not met by insurance or other assistance programs.

No FEMA applications can be accepted after the deadline, but FEMA will continue to approve disaster assistance for eligible survivors who applied. To date, more than $14.8 million in federal disaster assistance has been approved FEMA and SBA for homeowners, renters and businesses in Illinois.

Registration is quick and easy:

  • Register by calling the FEMA helpline: 800-621-FEMA (3362). Survivors who use TTY may call 800-462-7585;
  • Register online at DisasterAssistance.gov; or
  • Register with a tablet or smartphone by downloading the FEMA app or going to m.FEMA.gov.

SBA low-interest disaster loans are a major source of federal rebuilding funds.

Survivors with insurance should register and keep FEMA updated.

FEMA Disaster Assistance is Available for Illinois Tornado Survivors but Deadline to Register Less Than a Week Away

DENVER – Those following Colorado’s recovery from severe storms, flooding, landslides and mudslides can draw upon a variety of Web and social media resources from the state and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The president’s major disaster declaration of Sept. 14, 2013, authorized funding for FEMA’s Individual Assistance and Public Assistance programs. Although registration is now closed for both programs, survivors can still contact FEMA’s Helpline at 800-621-3362 with questions. Also, many online resources are available for information and updates.

Individual Assistance for homeowners and renters in 11 designated Colorado counties included grants for temporary housing, home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses not met by insurance or other assistance programs. In addition, low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration covered residential and business losses not fully compensated by insurance.

Public Assistance helps state and local governments in 18 designated Colorado counties with critical infrastructure repair, as well as aiding certain types of private nonprofit organizations. FEMA reimburses 75 percent of the cost of eligible projects.

OAKLAND, Calif. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to assist the state of California combat the Colby Fire currently burning in Los Angeles County.

On January 16, 2014, the State of California submitted a request for a fire management assistance declaration for the Colby Fire.  The authorization makes FEMA funding available to reimburse up to 75 percent of the eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling the fire.

At the time of the request, the fire was threatening 500 homes in the areas of Glendora and San Dimas with a combined population of 100,000.  All of the homes threatened are primary residences. The fire is also threatening Little Canyon Reservoir, potable water supplies, secondary power lines, and wilderness preserves.  Mandatory evacuations are taking place for approximately 7000 people.  The fire started on January 16, 2014, and has burned in excess of 1700 acres of State and private land. 

The President’s Disaster Relief Fund provides funding for federal fire management grants made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. Eligible costs covered by the grant can include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; tools, materials and supplies; and mobilization and demobilization activities.

FEMA Provides Federal Funding to Combat Colby Fire in Los Angeles County, California

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois tornado survivors have until 6 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 25, to visit the FEMA Disaster Recovery Center at the Festival of Lights Building on East Washington Street in East Peoria.  

After that date, survivors of the Nov. 17 Illinois tornadoes can still get help by calling the FEMA helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362). Survivors who use TTY can call 800-462-7585. The toll-free telephone numbers operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

Survivors can also call the helpline to register with FEMA before the Jan. 27 registration deadline. Other ways to register include online at DisasterAssistance.gov or with a smartphone or tablet by downloading the FEMA app or going to m.FEMA.gov. Survivors must register before the deadline to be eligible for possible grants and SBA low-interest disaster loans for temporary rental assistance, home repair and rebuilding, replacement of lost personal items, and other disaster-related expenses. Assistance will continue after Jan. 27, but applicants must register by that date to be considered.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Nov. 17 tornado survivors who fail to return completed Small Business Administration low-interest disaster loan applications may be saying no to federal assistance.                         

Some survivors may be counting on a future insurance settlement to cover all the costs of rebuilding. Maybe they don’t want a disaster loan or fear they cannot afford one. Or maybe they need assistance completing the SBA disaster loan application.

But there are good reasons for FEMA applicants who have been contacted by SBA to submit a completed disaster loan application by the Monday, Jan. 27 deadline.

SBA offers disaster loans to tornado-affected homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes and private nonprofit organizations for physical damage in the following Illinois counties: Champaign, Douglas, Fayette, Grundy, Jasper, LaSalle, Massac, Pope, Tazewell, Vermilion, Wabash, Washington, Wayne, Will and Woodford. 

Economic injury disaster loans are available to provide working capital to eligible small businesses and non-profit organizations located in the counties listed above and the adjacent counties.

Some of the top reasons for submitting an SBA application by the deadline include:

  • A future insurance settlement may fall short. Survivors may find out they are underinsured for the amount of work it takes to repair or replace a damaged home. An SBA low-interest loan can cover the uninsured costs. By submitting the loan application on time, survivors may have loan money available when it is needed. SBA can approve a loan for the repair or replacement of a home up to $200,000. The loan balance will be reduced by a survivor’s insurance settlement. However, the opportunity for an SBA disaster loan may be lost if they wait until after the application deadline.
  • SBA can help renters repair or replace disaster damaged personal property. Renters, as well as homeowners, may borrow up to $40,000 to repair or replace clothing, furniture, appliances, damaged vehicles.
  • By submitting an SBA loan application, survivors keep the full range of disaster assistance available as an option. SBA may refer applicants who do not qualify for a loan to FEMA for grants to replace essential household items, replace or repair a damaged vehicle, or cover storage expenses, among other serious disaster-related needs. But if survivors do not submit their disaster loan applications, the assistance process may stop. Survivors are not required to accept a loan offer.
